discosi
1996 discovery. I have recently noticed a few more oil spots on my drive. On closer inspecion it appears to be originating from the rear differential where the pinion exits the diff case. Looking through the work shop manual there seems to be a seal in this location. Are these seals items that regulary go, and how easy are they to replace?
BogMonster
Yes there is a seal, yes they go, not too bad to change, in that order. You may need to replace the flange as well (the bit the propshaft bolts to) as there is a seal track on the flange and if that is scored, then a new seal won't last any time. discosi
You say not too bad to change, is this the case if you have the required specialist tools, such as the flange restraint one, centralising peg tool etc, or can it be done with a standard tool kit, sockets, spanners etc.
LR90
No special tools required. You won't even need to jack the Disco up. drop the prop, remove flange nut, remove flange. Prise out old seal and tap in new. Refit flange and prop.
Mark
As Trev says, not a difficult job to do, but may be made easier if you make yourself something to lock the flange with. I made this: Cheers Mark
