Starting turning on an old lathe

It is. But a new mounting is, hopefully, on its way. I doubt it will arrive this week, though, which is annoying. But for £60 for the motor, can't really complain.

Well, exactly. Seemed rude to leave it there. And covered by eBay and all that...

Annoying that's it's broken, but they'll sort that, or I'll get a full refund.

Now, "all" I have to do is figure the wiring, and manhandle it into place with a dodgy shoulder.  Thankfully eldest is home for a few days....

Wiring.

Theoretical thinking time, as I'm not going out to the workshop today, bar to move stuff there.

I want the new motor to run in both directions.

I think I've got it. Well, a bit of it.

The drum switch does forward and reverse. Somehow. Park that for a bit.

The motor comes with links that determine orientation.

Bin these.

Several sheets of paper and cups of coffee I think I have a plan.

Bring four cores to the drum, then hope the drum switch can cope with it.

It's very old school so I hope it can be configured to switch over.

I wonder if I could take a few days off FROM Christmas....

The drum switch does what I think it needs to. Not a surprise. But the last time I looked at this I wasn't able to figure it out.

There's two banks of three terminals. The corresponding terminals connect with the switch in position one and the outer terminals cross over in position two.

In neutral all terminals are isolated.

There's a third bank of two terminals, I think these are for the line in. These are isolated on neutral.

I think I've got this right, in my head. The rest is mechanical. Which I might not do until the shoulder is better.

Yes, well, that didn't work.

Or. It did but kept one of the windings live when in neutral.

So no good.

This is the inside of the drum switch. Superb heavy duty engineering, but I couldn't figure a way of reconfiguring it to swap one pair and not the other, as well as isolating the lines when in neutral.

I need a few more bits, specifically some decent 25mm cable glands, and I can fit this to the lathe and see if it runs.

I've also got a starter thing in a box with a big red button, and I'm looking for a soft starter I can afford, so I can use the higher speeds.

Slowly getting there.

I'm hoping to get this done today.

The drum switch has a plastic lever, and my lathe has the direction control down by the saddle, so that won't work.

Playing with the box and the lever between the saddle and the drum I think I can make it work.

I need a new lever.

A bit of scrap and some playing with tools, i think this will work.

That took a lot more messing than I'd like. I had to shorten the lever arm, and modify the link piece. But I've a nice satisfying click in both directions now.

Many, many choice words later I have the switch and motor physically installed.

I don't know if it's the cold. Or the couple of ciders I had last night but every step of this job has been a battle. Nothing major, but everything has to be done twice or three times.

Hopefully tomorrow will be easier.

Success! I have a lathe that turns in both directions. And in top speed in forward, which is scary fast....

That was a fun side project.

Some warmer evening I'll do a proper clean up, and investigate fitting a quick change tool post.
