Winnet
Hi all I have a broken halfshaft and smashed CV in the front axle of a RR Classic. I have stripped the axles and got a new CV and halshaft but the halfshaft is different. The old one has a shoulder that keeps a brass bush against the swivel but the new one doesn't. Is this a problem or do I have the wrong halfshaft?

landmannnn
Take the brass bush off the old shaft and put it on the new one.
LR90
Sorry Winnet but what year is this? I don't recall ever seeing the brass bush and I can see the land for the axle tube seal but can't picture what in the swivel the brass bush would run against or why. On the assumption it is an early feature later dropped I'd just fit your replacement shaft and stick the bush on the shelf for now. Hopefuly someone here has more knowledge on this though
Winnet
Thanks guys. It is a 1989 RR 3.5EFI front axle so the shafts are 10/32. I had a look at it again late last night after half a bottle of wine and think I have sussed it out. I reckon the brass bush is held against the back of the swivel house by the lip on the old shaft, presumably this is to help reduce the lateral movement of the shaft. There is a circlip thing at the end of the replacement shaft which engages inside the CV itself (no circlip on the old shaft) to prevent lateral movement. I am putting the old shaft down to the local garage so they can suss out a replacement and in the meantime I will stick the replacement shaft in to see what happens. But as always it has started to snow up here in Aberdeen and the motor is in pieces, guaranteed to be gone by the time I get it fixed isn't it! G. Andy
well the shaft with the bush is the same as a early disco, i know cause i sent Winnet a piccy of my broken shaft before he asked this here. you got snow? u git i'd love snow from friday onwards, cant have it before got my motorbike test on thursday & they cancel them cause of snow. Winnet
That is why the skinny replacement one confused me Andy. I have sent the old one down to the local garage and they should be able to suss it out for me. By the sounds of it it is hit or miss what is in the actual axle as opposed to should be in the axle. We have a wee drop of snow here but it is slowly fading and by the time I get the RR back on the road it will be gone. G.
Dikiy
I have almost same situation on my 1993 Disco 2,5tDi. The front rigth 10splin halfshaft looks like on the picture below. Is it possible to replace new type halfshaft (lower on the Winnet's picture) by the old type (upper)? Are they the same dimensions and strength? There is possibility to buy used 10splin halfshafts for 50USD. Or better to replace existing both 10splin halfshafts with assembled differential by 24 splin halfshafts and corresponding diff. ass.? It is possible to bay used diff.ass. with 24 splin halfshafts (very good condition) for 300USD
JST
i snapped a 10 spline shaft same as the lower of the two and replaced it with one like the top one complete with the bush and had no problems. that was on an '84 90.
Winnet
I have a proper one identical to my first shaft sitting in the garage since the initial replacement seems to be working fine. As long as the one without the shoulder has the small clip at the CV joint end to hold it in there should not be a problem. G.
Dikiy
Thanks for answers! I bought used 24sp. diff ass. and two halfshafts (was agreed for 200USD) because when I was dismantle front axel I find two different front halfshafts have been installed. The right one- 10sp. new type and the left one 10sp. old type. Here You can see a difference between 10sp. old, 10sp. new and 24sp. halfshafts. Yes, 10sp. halfshafts interchangeable, but they have different oil seal diameter. Also we can see difference between 24sp. and 10sp. halfshafts diameter on the 2nd picture.
