The translation units simply control the pitch of the propeller blades on each prop set. The Contra Rotation comes from the gearbox on the front of the engine. There's 2 propeller shafts, one running inside the other. Once the TRU is removed, there's the intershaft bearing that supports the front end of the rear set of blades, shaft spinning one way, bearing outer race spinning the other.... The torque setting on the intershaft bearing retaining nut is 1200 foot pounds, (and a left hand thread) or me on the end of a full length of scaffolding tube. Behind that is the nut that holds the rear prop on. Fascinating to understand....
landroversforever
Well I’m sure others would be pleased to see more pictures too…. It sounds fascinating! What was the reason for two sets of props vs say a single set of 4 or more? Just more power?
vulcan bomber
The perk of a contra rotating prop is you double the area of the propeller but keep it the same size, there is a limit in size, that being the speed the tips of the blades travel at, as well as the blades hitting the ground, the fuselage etc. The forums not really the place for pics but if your a Facebook user then add me and also search for Avro Shackleton. Loads of pictures, explanations and questions answered.
JohnnoK
I went to the monthly engine run-ups of the one in Cape Town a few months ago and to hear those Griffins running is something special to behold.
