Play in differentials and LT230 :(

Recommended Posts

Ok so I bought a new project, dropped the back prop off today as I was going to remove the stupid spacer someone has put in!

It was then that I realised there is allot of slack in both diffs and the transfer box!

Does this mean all three are broken?

I wasn't expecting to move the rear prop and see the front move back and forth so much through the transfer box as well.

Excuse the music the radio was on in the background, you might want to mute it 😁

Mine looked similar to yours. When I rebuilt the transfercase I found nothing wrong with the diff, no wear at all, just the required clearances for it to function correctly.  I replaced it with an ATB which took all that play away, but not because there was something wrong with it.

Diffs always have some play - you have the backlash between the ring and pinion gears, the diff bevel gears and any slack in the bearings.  There is a chance the backlash is excessive or that the bevel gears have worn their cup washers or cross pin and excessive movement, but the chances are that the bulk of the play is in the half shafts and drive flanges.  You don’t normally get much spline wear on the diff end of the shafts, but they do wear on the outboard ends and the drive flanges are quite soft.  That wear is even more so on 300Tdi and later axles with the slim hubs as their splines run dry.  Whip the plastic cones off the hubs and have a look for movement between shaft and flange, or better still, remove the drive flanges and check the splines.  Drive flanges are pretty cheap to replace.

Thanks, these are 10 spline axles so I think the drive flanges are built into the shafts but I will try and pull them out and have a look.

10spline shafts on RRC and D1 had integrated flanges, but they were separate splined parts on Defender and predecessors.  24 spline rear shafts were integrated on 300Tdi+ rear axles and on some post 2002 110 rears, but never the front.  You might have RR or D1 axles, though.
