Rover 4.2 V8 - new camshaft time.

Recommended Posts

Right putting a camshaft in. It’s an auto so I’m going with h180 from Turner Engineering.

Obviously new hydraulic tappets, gaskets (although I do need to work out the set) and what else ?

timing chain - but what sort - I only do low miles so may not matter too much.

I have a v belt front end so I’m thinking both belts.

Anything else to do or look at while I’m in there without this becoming a full engine rebuild ?

Double-roller chain, Turner will be able to advise.

Check the rocker shafts for wear on the under side, or you are wasting your money with a higher lift cam.

I run an H200 with Rhoads lifters which allow you to get away with an auto -sings at higher revs :)

I run a H180 in my 4.2, all from Turners. I'd buy a standard spec set of gears and chain. I don't do many miles either.
Turners can supply all this and the gaskets and are super helpful.

Best not to look then 😆 I would be inclined to go for a double roller chain (Cloyes or JP ?) and crank pulley oil seal.

You might also want to consider using a break in oil specifically for flat tappet engines for the 20 mins at 2000rpm start up and  a few miles beyond; oils commonly around now don't have enough ZDDP and have too much detergent for cam break in on flat tappet motors from the 60s. See for example link. That said too much ZDDP is also bad, so don't use an additive.
