Astro_Al
Just for fun I'm combining series axle casings with defender diffs - neither of which have filler plugs. So I need to cut a hole in the axle casing, weld on a nut and screw in a removeable plug (bolt). Can anyone tell me a good height to do it at (I don't have any spares for reference)? Anyone done it and got any tips? Where should I put the hole? Cheers, Al.

MogLite
Just drill and tap ? How high ? Is the vehicle on ramps, or axle stands. If on a 4 -poster lift - I'd say about 6'6" from the ground
Astro_Al
Gordon Bennett! Thanks guys! Hmm, not sure about drilling and tapping - I would have thought the case material is too thin - anyone know how thick it is (it's pretty light and thats a reinforced one). I suppose I could overplate a bit of it, drill it and tap the whole lot, but I figured welding on a nut would cut out the tapping part! Lazy, see? Anyone know what the level of oil should be relative to the diff? Al.

Turbocharger
Couldn't you go to Sodbury next weekend and pay pence for a Series axle casing with a filler plug in it?
Astro_Al
Ta for the pic. I could pick some up, but I've already made trips and paid for 2 brand new ones, so I don't really want to remove them for a piece of old crud. I'll just weld on a small plate, drill and tap a hole, et voila! A lot less work than cleaning up a couple of used casings, removing mine and putting the replacement ones in. If anyone can give me any info for the height of the hole I'd appreciate it. Cheers. Al.
Les Henson
Can't give you exact measure ments, but just above half way would be sensible. The level must be high enough that the oil can lubricate the pinion bearings while the vehicle is on a level surface. I don't think it would matter if it was a small amount too high. Oh well, what else is there to do at 5:30am? Might as well go and find out Here you go - 4-inches in old money and 100mm in metric. Les. Astro_Al
Flippin' eck Les! Woken up by the dustmen again?! I know the feeling - I got up so early this morning (3am) that I had to walk in cos the 'Metro' isn't running yet. I'm too tight to spring for a taxi! Cheers for that - nice one. That's exactly what I needed. Now, GET TO BED! Al.
