istruggle2gate11
Hi all, I finally got around to re-placing the [now knackered] viscous with an electric fan tonight. The fan is off a 1998 Transit, using an x-eng fan switch. All in and running, but Im uncomfortable with the way the fan is on and off, it seems to run for 25 seconds, has a break for 30 seconds, then repeats. I understand that the thermostat controller is doing its job right, but I would rather see the fan running for slightly longer at lesser intervals. Perhaps the fan is just so good? Its a greedy thing, it pops 30amp fuses for fun when striking up, (the standard 20amp relay was getting a little warm) so on the shopping list is a high amp relay and fuse from VWP, is there any [easy] way of making the fan run for slightly longer? I did consider a standard timing relay on the low tension side of the existing power control relay? (i.e. the signal from the thermostat is delayed by false means). Any help / advice apreciated. Hybrid_From_Hell
I had this on mine. In simple terms the fans are dropping the heat to the point where the thermostat switch is saying off, then as soon as they go off the heat builds up and the switch then says on again Simple way is to change the switch to a different setting There is a base setting - fans switch off when this temp is reached Top setting - this switches the fans on when reached. My guess is you may have a close pair of settings, there are loads, but 1st remove the termo switch it should if you are lucky have 2x sets of numbers on and that at least gives a starting point for options, I have a book which has the full range and what they are fitted to so if you then nip down the scrappy you know what your after Nige
istruggle2gate11
Thanks Nige, never realised such a wide choice was available, a little more searching and found this on x-eng website Ive shamelessly lifted this from Si's site........................... Part No. Temp °C 50091 88-83/92-87 50100 82-68 50101 84-79/88-83 50250 86-76 50012 86-77 50090 86-81 50120 88-79 50296 88-79/110-102 50271 88-83 50217 88-83/92-87 50240 90-80 50113 92-82/95-80 50170 92-87 50215 92-87/97-92 50011 93-88 50102 93-88/97-92 50035 95-85/102-92 50130 95-86 50030 95-90 50092 95-90/100-95 50104 97-92 50103 97-92/101-96 50214 97-92/102-97 50190 100-95 50198 100-95/110-105 50000 103-98 50191 120-115 So Si would have supplied me the "50091" perhaps the "50250" would be a better bet? So Si would have supplied me the "50091" perhaps the "50250" would be a better bet? 50250 is going to come ON at 120 degress ? and then trip off at 115, which isn't much of a range for a V8 Also there is a thought that once the heat gets to a certain point (too hot too late fans on) its a B*gger to get back on top, better to have them come on early and keep the heat down. I would say you wnat them on around 100 and then off around high 80s low 90s maybe ?? I have (cos I iz kind) had a quick look at me book...... How about : (assuming you have 22mm Metric fitment) 92-87 SNB758 Peugeout 309 1.9 diesel / Citroen ZX1.9D or if you give me the temop range I see what one is fitted to car wise Nige
Pete Attryde
According to the list above 50250 comes on at 86 and goes off at 76. At least that's what I can see. Pete.
Hybrid_From_Hell
ARGH yep I meant to say what you have now etc.....the one your suggesting will prob be too far the other end of the scale. I'd still say the suggested Peug Ciroen one is a nice possiblity and prob cheap as chips from a scrappy to find out Nige
Pete Attryde
The list also states that the second contacts in the 50091 come on at 92 and go off at 87 which sounds familiar. Pete.
Jon White
Er - why not just use the other set of contacts in the switch that Si supplied which have the same temperature range??? 50091 is a dual switch with 2 settings....... Do NOT buy these from a scrappy - they die for a hobby and they aint a lot of money (less than a tenner) brand new! Jon

Yes, I do have the second pin, on at 92° off at 87° so I could use that. I know I should not rely lucas, but a point to make is that when running on the lower pin, my temp gauge is where it has always been when running the viscous (just below halfway), if I put it on the second pin, then the gauge is well over halfway, suppose I should plug the old laptop in and let Megasquirt tell me the truth! The reason for picking the "50250" was that it has 10° between on and off, thus giving a longer fan run time at lesser intervals.
Mark90
How about a less powerful fan? Or running half speed as per BBC's solution.
