Taking out a Mayflower/Fairley PTO Winch for EBAY

Its taken a while but its happened

I have decided I am not going to be a serious enough off roader to need a winch. If I need a winch I've been an ass and got myself into somewhere I shouldnt be.

Therefore I am going to remove my Fairley Superwinch and the PTO for it and sell it on ebay or something. Unless someone wants to but it from me here.

Its Not working at the moment. Probably for 2 reason.

1 One of the shafts has come off.. (Simple job, local shaft person will fix it for £50)

2. Not sure. The Drum seems to run free. Looking at the manual there seem to be a spline which might be broken.

PTO Works ok but doesnt like not having anything attached to it.

Think I'll get an Overdrive and put in place. With the removal of a ton of metal from the front and an extra 'gear' I might be able to hit the elusive 60 mark.

I will attach pictures eventually..but my query is what the heck do I sell it all for?

I don't think I have seen one on ebay to compare..but I know that there is just no comparison to a whimpy electric one (Oops fighting talk)

Price guestimates please!

Err assuming its one of the early fairey/mayflower drum winches, if its absolutely complete, and in good working order they're worth about £200 - £250 tops.

If there are bits missing, broken, bodged etc etc adjust price downwards accordingly. These are not hugely valuable pieces of kit these days, and series ownership seems to be diminishing, and spare parts are extreemly difficult to come by. You usually end up having to either make parts, or cannibalise another unit for spares.

Pete,

I would try and get the winch working if you want to maximise your income from it... there is a good link http://www.series2cl...ic,44878.0.html on restoring/refurbishing these winches.

I have one fitted, and although I don't use it much, I love it. A fantastic piece of period engineering. There are not many of them about, and while quite a few have gone for some of the suggested figures of between £200-250 I would personally try to hold out for a bit more, maybe £300-400, for someone that wants a period piece to set off his restoration, or for someone who needs a commercial-grade workhorse... remember these winches have a 100% duty rating... unlike electric winches, which, if you are using them hard, may need to cool down between pulls.

The engineering on these is wondrous to behold, and they will pull way in excess of what they are normally rated at... the problem is that the chassis mounting is the limiting factor for these winches, as in they are so powerful they could rip right out of the chassis (or pull a house down). One way around it would be to tube all the mounting holes in the chassis.

And just for some gratuitous winch porn, here is mine at work...

Effortless that looks pretty cool man! when did you finish assembling it? Also I sent you a pm about some parts Im looking for!

You have email.

Finished it about a year ago, but took nearly 10 years to fit!!

I have most parts for a complete winch, bar the dog selector (310) and the clutch dog (371).

Cheers,

Effortless.
