300Tdi Dipstick Tube Snapped

Gents,

I was only checking my oil level. Honest. Took the dipstick out and half the tube came with it. :angry:

It's snapped just above the bracket thing just below the first bend looking from above, if that makes sense.

To be fair, this was pointed out to me when the head was replaced a few months ago.

Can anyone tell me if this can be replaced easily? I hope the exhaust manifold doesn't need to be removed as I ain't got the long sockets required to remove it.

I'll tape it for now, but it's holding OK. Just need to get it mended. :rolleyes:

300Tdi dipstick tube is replaceable, use ERR4697 & a new 'O' ring ERR3683 at the tube to engine block joint. I can't add a parts page diagram, cos my stoopid printer has run out of black ink & refuses to do anymore work till I get it a new one.

How easy? How long? Will I need any special tools? :unsure:

I'm told it's a single nut, but the access looks bad.????

The 'o' ring end of the dip stick tube just pushes into it's hole, align the bracket half way up with the threaded hole in the block and bolt up. Do it from the top.

A chimp would take 5 minutes to do it, you'll do it in 3 minutes including removing the broken bit.

Chaps,

The day of the dipstick tube replacement has dawned.

I'm doing an oil change on the 110 too, just in case there'a any mess. The oil's due for changing anyway.

Had a look. There's no nut or thread. The new tube has two small metal collars with a rubber O-ring in the middle. Below that, there's about half an inch of tube.

I assume it's just a push-fit job?

Can anyone qualify this. There's no fixings anywhere on the block. It's just flat.

Bonnet up, 110 on ramps. Oil draining.

Any nice people out there able to give me a quick reply to encourage my next move?

And with a mental age of 2.

It took about 40 minutes. Had a chat with Twisty first, who confirmed things and offered to pop in from Wales (!!) if I got stuck.

Then a lot of playing around with mole grips (not enough access) and bent-nose pliers to get the tube settled the last 2mm into its hole. Didn't work.

So I just pushed down bloody hard on the tube from the top to get the bracket bolt hole aligned and fiddled with a ring spanner.

Seems fine now. I hope. :blink:

40-minutes! did you chat for 35 of them or perhaps replace the clutch while you were a bit grubby :rtfm:

Knowing Si it was 5 minutes to fit it and 35 minutes polishing it ;)

I'm just glad he's practicing for when the 90 needs all these little jobs doing.

Hi All,

I'm new to this scene as I've always gone for smaller toy cars like MX5's etc... 

I've recently bought myself a Landrover Defender 1987 with a 300TDI engine from a disco under the bonnet... A couple of fiddly things are wrong with it at the moment but it'll be an ongoing project.. Reason for my comment on this thread is one of the issues is the dipstick tube completely came out when i tried to take the rod out to check the oil... Where on earth does it fit in?!

could someone do me a favour and let me know either by pointing it out using the number keys on the diagram in this thread or by describing the location?

 

I'm an amateur but I'm doing my best to learn!!
