rjblank
I have a 'lectric fan from a BMW 530 (V8) in my Landy. It takes up most of the radiator. It moves lots of air...

Les Henson
Most single fans over 30cm will be sufficient. The only consideration is how hard it is/will it fit. A small fan will run for longer to reduce coolant temperature - whereas a large fan will not. Most fans are not designed to run for long periods, so if you fit a small fan, then expect it to need replacing in the future - due to bearing failure. A few other things you might need to consider- Push (outside the radiator), or pull (inside the engine bay). Current draw (a lot are 20-amps running, but twice that for start-up. Thermal switch controlled only, or override as well. Single speed or twin speed motor. Don't use the Kenlowe type of fan switch - they are real rubbish and fail in the off position. You then take a chance of your engine overheating, and have to bypass the switch at the side of the road to keep your engine cool (but then have the problem of the fan running all the time until you fix it). X-Eng fan switch is easy to fit, very reliable, and the switch itself is available from any motor factors (even Halfords ) Les.

Thing is it seems like its taking too long to switch on and i dont know if i trust it. If left ticking over how long would you expect a Rover v8 to take to get up to temperature before it needs the fan? I should probably get the thermometer re-wired up! Les Henson
You need to know at what tempertaure the coolant is when the fan switches on in order to determine if it's working correctly. A fixed or viscous fan runs all the time when it doesn't actually need to, so an electric fan coming on occasionally might seem odd, but is in fact ok. If you fit an electric fan to a 300TDi for example - you would have to try very hard to get the fan to come on at all. Les.
