could anyone help by telling me is my disco a" series "1,2 or 3

i need a new alternator and need to know the "series No.

Hi jockybee. Ever since the intro of the Discovery 2 in late 1998 the previous model has been unofficialy called Discovery 1 so yours is a D1.

Just tell the supplier its a 300tdi, from memory there were two pulley sizes and the later 300tdi had the smaller pulley so poor alt spun faster for more power also had shorter belt due to the pulley size.

For once I agree with Sotal

It is a D1 and as suggested it needs the alternator with the smaller 49mm pulley.

Of course your replacement alternator may come without a pulley and u re-use the old one,

I thought none of them came with pulleys, though I suppose you can buy one. I changed my earlier big pulley to the later smaller one partly to get my rev counter to read properly. I suppose it also increases the charge, but somehow I doubt it as doesn't the alternator have a voltage regulator to stop overcharging? Not great on the eleckertrickal bits, me

The smaller pulley is intended to make the alternator spin faster at idle to improve the charging at idle Jim.
