2.5 NA LR & 2.5 NA Sherpa

Recommended Posts

My old Lightweight had the Sherpa 2.5 N/A fitted and I recall that the timing cover was different. IIRC, it was not sealed in the same way as the LR engine and mud managed to get in far easier.

I think Les Henson's old 109 'Catflap' had that engine fitted.

The sherpa engine has an idler wheel to make sure there is enough wrap around the camshaft sprocket - The injector pumps are the same, but the sherpa one sits higher. The Timing belts are different, so he won't get one from Land Rover. Tensioner is a Land Rover part - same as the 90/110. The timing cover on a sherpa is a tin plate and the timing chest is different too. If he replaced the timing chest, front cover, bought injector pipes for a standard 90/110 - he could convert the whole engine to standard Land Rover 90/110 engine.

Sorry but not all the information is correct. The front covers on the Sherpa 2.5n/a diesel are indeed different from the Land rover applicaiton (flimsy aluminium as opposed to solid). Only the camshaft and crankshaft gear are the same. Tensioner, timing belt (LBU1200) and idler gear are different. Evans Halshaw or similar stock these parts. Fuel injection pumps also have different identification numbers. and are calibrated differently.
