rusty_wingnut Posted July 21, 2008 Share Posted July 21, 2008 I know i've got these to do soon enough. not owning anything particularly meaty in terms of presses, can anyone advise if it would be simpler to give the truck to my friendly and reliable landy specialist and let them sweat it out? Muther Trucker Posted July 21, 2008 Share Posted July 21, 2008 you can do it without a press, but it is hard graft, first spend a few days spraying all the nuts and bolts with wd40 + wire brushing them, go for the genuine bushes if you can and buy new nuts + bolts aswell... to get the old ones out you will need a big socket and an even bigger hammer, or a blowtorch + a face mask (and a big socket and big hammer) and a hacksaw... if you burn the rubber take care not to get it on your skin, as it is a carcenogen + can eat away at your skin.... to get the new ones in you`ll need some thick threaded bar (12mm) and some nuts and sockets + you can wind them in.... however, the last lot we did we borrowed the local landy place`s press, took the arms down there, and the whole job was done in about 10 mins... your choice!!! dougstar Posted July 21, 2008 Share Posted July 21, 2008 As MT says loads of WD40/easol or the like for a couple of days prior to the work commencing, I did mine last year a my method was to butcher them out with hacksaws after the socket method failed making sure not to damage the faces at all and a small slither of grease and pressed mine back in at work, job done the harder part for me was getting the arms on and off the car Where abouts are you rusty i may be able to get them pressed back in if you are localish?? but most garages will have a bearing press and will probs pop them in for you for a bluey i would have thought Dougie Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The garage near me want £55 an hr to do it, so i'll suffer the pain, already done the chassis bushes on me series a few years back - it can't be any worse?! Litch Posted July 25, 2008 Share Posted July 25, 2008 Easy job DIY with no need to burn out the old bush. Cut through the rubber with a holesaw to remove the inner-sleeve and then cut a slot along the outer-sleeve using a hacksaw, a couple of taps will see it pop out or the radis arm. Clean out the hole to make sure it is smooth and tap in the new bush (OE is my preference) using a socket or some steel-tubing the exact size of the outer-sleeve (some lubrication is important here). You can press it in if you have a suitable sized vice (I do) but even so it is as easy to tap it in with a hammer. When I last did my 90 I was doing them in about 30-mins each and this was using OE bushes, not polyurathene ones which are easier to fit. freeagent Posted July 25, 2008 Share Posted July 25, 2008 you can drill lots of 13mm holes in the rubber, then thread a hacksaw blade through and saw the rubber out. Then saw through the metal outer casing in 3-4 places, on the 3rd or 4th cut the bush should start to move, then knock it out with a hammer and drift.# I did burn mine out as it was easier than sawing the rubber.... Les Henson Posted July 25, 2008 Share Posted July 25, 2008 If you take the radius arm off yourself and then take it to a local garage, they will press out the old ones and fit the new for not a lot of beer money. I sometimes bash the old ones out with a suitable socket and then use the same socket to drift the new one in using a vice or a suitable press. Les.
