Puma engine chipping

Recommended Posts

So anyone on here have a chipped Puma and if so who did you get to do it, why and what do you think?

i notice JE Eng have just launched their phase one for it to take it to 165bhp with a chip reflash/upgrade

Does Porny do them or just td5s?

I'm biased - they drive much better!!, but then I do them and can also remove the factory speed limter.

Still early days compared to Td5 tuning and development, but you do get a good and safe gain (genuine +50Nm and 150bhp)

Stage One (still working on stage 2 at the moment)....

You’re looking at approx. a 30bhp and 50Nm gain over standard, which if your Defender actually makes what LR claim, then....

Standard - 120bhp and 359Nm torque

Remapped - 150bhp and 409Nm (torque is more important!!)

And the option of removing/resetting the speed limiter.

I realise that these figures are slightly lower that others claim, but this is the typical gain on a proper, 4wd temperature controlled rolling road. In all honesty there is a huge difference in what people claim, and actually develop for Td5's... so Puma's are probably no different. All I know is when driving you instantly notice the extra power and torque.

Remap undetectable to LR Dealers ;) (as per Td5 if done properly)

Price - pm me for details - with forum discount.

Is simply just a remap for stage 1.... Although I can also supply none CAT down pipes, ITG air filters etc etc.

Hey guys

So Ive had the Twisted Re-Map on my Puma.

What can I say other then is drives sooooo differently.

1st - pretty the same

2nd - bit more kick

3rd - more gain in lower to high revs

4th - compleatly different, is literally pulls all the way through from 2000 / 3500, that's 50 / 80 mph

5th - same as 4th but a bit less speed gain really as at this point your at about 95 mph flying and feeling a bit weird because you in the overtaking lane keeping up with the speed of the traffic...

6th - it then crusies......

So, getting a side exit exhaust from them, new intercooler, pipes, air filter

can't wait to see what happens.

As it happens i was running mud terrains at that point, ARB bumper, Roof rack? Imaging when I put the AT's on and if I had less weight, ok, so it's not about speed, but you can feel the power gain!

ha ha, damm stright, I would rather fix it myself then have a Land Rover dealer touch it ( no offense LR dealers out there, I know it's not you it's me )

Which works fine until you have an expensive bang you want somebody else to pay for :)

A decision for you obviously but not one I would take quite so early in the life of a new engine in the range, the weaknesses of which have yet to be identified!

Bye bye warranties :)

Know where you are coming from Stephen !! which is one of the reasons, i have not done mine up till now !!

As Porny says,, should be undetectable, if done properly..

I have downloaded many remapped software for the Volvo D5 unit's , and as it uses the original software part number,, is undetectable even when read on the dealer VIDA system,, can only tell when the vehicle is driven !!

too true a point there Stephen, you would be mad to discount warranty as you say.

Porny, looks good from a figures point of view, i am thinking possibly early next year.

presume you recommend no cat and straight through mid pipe as well?

These guys chip the Puma in fords , But im sure they can do the same for LR

Jase,, any personal experience with these guys,, without people thinking its O/T !!

Need the rally transit doing before WRC Germany in a few weeks !! it tends to struggle with all the bits, and box on the back !! :(

I don't think you would be mad to do it, it just pays to be aware of the risk when doing something. The "risk" is that Land Rover have a specific technical bulletin that says that all diesel power upgrades on any of the engines invalidate the warranty, full stop, no exceptions or excuses. Chances are nobody would even look especially if as Porny said the software codes are even the same.

Hey, Badger,

That sounds pretty impressive difference (although you're a brave man cruising at 95 IMHO - not the most stable vehicles at speed).

What sort of fuel economy do you get? I know you've also got all your external toys on, which will alter the figures, but was curious as to the negative effect on economy of having extra power.

You are right, at 95 it does feel more like 130, but on a clear straight road, had to test it.

However it's not about speed for me just the power gain, and on the fuel consumption side of things it's is better, as you have more power at lower revs, so at 55 / 65 it does around 29 mph. Again kit does affect it, and I am curious to see what happens when I take off the gear / put AT on (as there are MUD T's at the MO )

On the warranty note, unless the dealer drives the truck up to 4th gear, they will not know. Also the warranty is only void on the parts you change. I.E I have fitted a GW lewis kit, this means my land rover suspension is now out of warranty, not the engine. In fact i have booked in a my first 15k service already...

anyhow live and let live, chose your own gods etc etc
