Guest diesel_jim
I've got my laptop, my desk PC and the carPC i've built for the 110. desk PC goes through a wireless router to broadband. I can get internet access from my laptop (in built WIFI) via the router, no problems. I can also power up the carPC (on the floor with a car battery...SWMBO really likes it when i do that... ) and get internet via the USB WIFI stick i've got. Is there a way i can get my laptop to talk to my carPC with WIFI? Setting my documents to "shared" on the desk PC should work to enable me to share files, but thats with either the laptop or carPC "going through" the router. I wondered, for example, if i could just stand next to the 110 with said laptop and access files that are on my carPC via WIFI? failing that, does connecting a straight lead between the LAN socket work well? i could have an RG56 lead tucked away under a seat in the 110 to plug the laptop in, but wifi would be preferable. cheers
LandyManLuke
You should be able to set up an 'ad hoc' wireless network connection, though they can be pretty flakey, much more so than 'infrastructure' mode - using a wirless access point/router. I use a 'cross-over' RJ45/Cat5 lead to directly connect the laptop to the ITX, a normal network cable won't work, two cables and a switch/hub would. I share individual folders as/when required and access them using the network path, \\computername\sharedfoldername, which works fine for me. The main reason i use a hard connnection is i get bored of waiting for music to transfer over 11mbps, 100mbps is obviously a lot faster
jonnymaserati
if you just want to transfer small files, your laptop probably has bluetooth and you could get a bluetooth usb dongle for the car computer... you can just use the right click and send to command then. but indeed, look at setting up an ad-hoc wi-fi connection. you can make your laptop act like a router and assign an ip to the car computer, but this might cause you problems when you want to go back into the house and connect to your home wifi. if you're using a g or pre-n wifi, then the speed should be ok. can you connect them via a usb cable? http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_...ls/usbmain.html
Guest diesel_jim
I've got my laptop plugged into my router at the mo, hard drives on my desk PC set to public access, and just copying everything i need across.... nice and easy and quick! saves faffing around burning discs or using the memory stick a million times when it's full. cheers for the help. V8 Freak
Jamie, If it's just file transfers, why not use USB sticks ? 8gigs are cheap now and small enough to carry around loads of porn un-noticed.... Failing that, sharing folders on the two machines is easy to do. There are USB leads out there now for this sort of thing or you can use a LAN cable with crossover easy enough. If you ned help when I'm back in blighty, I'll pop round next time Sir les is welding my truck back together.... Neil

I now just email files to my self using google mail account or save to a USB memory stick. Not quite sure why Mr. Gates made it so complicated but he sure did.... Sounds like I am showing off, I am just trying to say it isn't that difficult. I do consider myself pretty competent with IT, PCs and the like but as I say the one thing that has stumped me is file and printer sharing over a wireless network. I defeated the difficulties with printer sharing by just buying a Lexmark wireless printer. as to file sharing still stumped......
BogMonster
Never figured it out either... use USB memory sticks and a USB hard drive for backups and the big stuff

Kitform
Set up a new connection between both computers using the advanced connection option. You should be able to connect via cable or wireless. Set one computer up as host and the other as client.
LandyManLuke
I find it far easier, and less confusing, to just set up networking connections manually.
