cbe Posted August 5, 2008 Share Posted August 5, 2008 Greetings from Brazil ! Just wondering if there are any techtips on how to fix the rather nerve-wrecking sqealing of the rear brakes. Tried about everything, except for an exchange of the disks for new originals. The vehicle is a Brazil-assembled (2001) Defender 110 CSW / 300 TDi with Salisbury rear axle and some 140.000 km on the clock. Any help is greatly appreciated ! JimAttrill Posted August 23, 2008 Share Posted August 23, 2008 I read up a lot on this one, we had a 130 with ear-splitting squeal from the back brakes only. Tried all sorts of pads, especially Ferodo and Lockheed/AP. Greased back of pads, etc. I came to the conclusion that the new disks had not been bedded in properly - run up to 60mph, brake hardish down to 30, repeat ten times. And then I read that the real problem is possibly doing a hard stop and then sitting with the brakes on as that transfers material from the pads to the disks. Apparently most times when people think their disks are warped it is caused by this. We even tightened the rear wheel bearings which then seemed to help a bit. Apparently stopping brake squeal can be just about impossible bar buying a new car.
