300TDI timing belt cover bearing renewal.

Having just forked out a large amount of money for a new front cover to replace the bearing for the fan pulley on my 300TDI I have decided to try and source and fit a new bearing to the old housing.

So far I have only got as far a removing the old bearing from the cover.

To do this I simply put the whole cover in the oven at gas mark 6 for half an hour and then supporting the cover on a couple of blocks of wood gently tapped the bearing and it dropped straight out. I was pleasently supprised by this as I had heard rumours that the bearing was nigh on impossible to remove without cracking the cover.

Some pictures,

The bearing has SKF and the following numbers on the rear 374056 B and 8741, however a google search with this info doesn't really come up with anything useful. Just thread on a french website that implies that SKF stopped making the bearing in 1998. The Thread.

I will get some dimensions from the bearing, but wondered if anyone had any ideas on where to source this bearing?

Failing that I think that there is sufficient material in the cover to machine it to take a couple of more standard bearings and then machine up a suitable spindle to take the pulley flange.

Hopefully I will be able to up date this soon with a source of a bearing and how to refit it.

Pete.

Barna, Thanks for that. I am hoping to find a replacement bearing in the uk for quite a lot less than that though.

I have had a look through an old thread on here an Dirtydiesel has apparently sourced a suitable replacement for around £7. so I have Pm'd him to see if he can give me some more information.

If you send me the dimensions I can ask Nick if can get one from border pumps and bearings, they share the same site

Mike

Mike if I hadn't left it at work I could have brought it up the unit this week, and you could have taken it away with you.

I'll get the dimensions next week and let you know.

Pete, I personally know a guy in Cape Town who has done this. He is an engineer and has lots of equipment so I don't know if what he did is within your capabilities - do you have a lathe, for example? I do know that he ended up with a greasable bearing. If you PM me I will give you his email address.

Just to let people know as I didn't get round to doing so at the time.

I managed to source a replacement bearing from Solent Bearings in Southampton (Part No. 374056B) for £62.79 Inc VAT back in August 2009.

Pressed it into the front cover at room temperature without any issues.

Hopefully they are still available!

Sam
