MAF sensor reading low

GBMUD

Recommended Posts

I had my 2004 Td5 110 plugged into a Rovacom box yesterday, just fiddling around and looking at fault codes, engine sensors and things. Anyway, I noticed that the MAF sensor was reading 4 Kg/Hr and did not seem to change when I revved the engine. It should apparently read rather higher than this at tickover and increase with engine speed as the volume of air flowing increases. The engine starts and runs fine and seems to go OK - as it has done since I have had it - 16 months, 25k miles. The total mileage is 80000. Any ideas? Is it FUBAR? Can I mend it? What should it read?

Thanks

Chris

I think they are usually about 55-58kg/hr here but that could be due to the difference in ambient temp between Jim & I!

When they "go" the reading usually drops to low 50s or high 40s (again, readings here) accompanied by a considerable loss of power and no fault code being logged. Possibly if the reading is completely silly like 4kg/hr the ECU recognises that fact and discounts the airflow reading completely just reverting to a default value for fuelling based on engine revs and pedal setting, I don't know but Porny probably will.

Maybe the Rovacon is the problem, can't say I have tried one of those, my experience is only on a T4/IDS because I am spawn of Satan :)

well, i had a problem with mine before.

if you really want to know if the engine is running off wrong data values. unplug it and run the engine. go for a drive. feel if there's any difference. if there is, means the engine is taking in wrong data from the sensor. if the sensor value is too far off, the engine ignores it and uses a default value from the ECU. when unplug, the engine assumes that the sensor is dead and uses the default value.

do bear in mind that this can lead to a little more black smoke under harsh accleration. i've ran my engine for over 15k km without this sensor until i decided to replace it just before the annual inspection. won't do any harm to the engine.
