suveer
Hi guys just a qik question. I have a 1997 300tdi disco 1. What will happen if the alternator packs up in the bush eg not charging or the bearings cease. Can the disco still be push started. will it be mobile. thanks in advance
BogMonster
If the alternator packs up the vehicle will run until the battery goes flat because the fuel solenoid needs power to keep it open, if you switch everything off (radio, heater etc) to minimise power drain, you should get a good few hours out of it I would think. You can remove something from inside the fuel solenoid (a spring I think) which will make it stay "always on" and run the vehicle with no electrical power at all and in that state you could push start it. If the bearings seize you are screwed as the fan belt which does the alternator, also does the water pump and with no fan belt the water pump won't run and the engine will overheat in a matter of a minute or two with no circulation. You MIGHT be able to find a 7PK belt which is a different length that could do the crank pulley, tensioner and water pump and nothing else, but I don't know - not tried it. Possible in theory
ThreeSheds
What he says /\ /\ /\ Also - If it has the electronic controlled injection pump that was fitted to later 300tdi engines then that would need juice anyway.

And if it has electronic diesel control it's likely to be an auto so you won't push start it anyway. Pete.
TheRecklessEngineer
As a very temporary bodge you can run one of those emergency fan belts straight from crank to water pump. Not ideal, but will get you a few miles off a motorway. Just bear in mind you will be runnning with no PAS and no power other than what is in the battery.
