mel
Hi, I've been offered a relatively low mileage (less than 100k) 300tdi which kicks out alot of white smoke from when it reaches about 2000 rpm. It starts and idles ok but then starts smoking once the revs hit above 2000 but then clears when revs come down again. The turbo was thought to be at fault and a second hand one fitted which doesn't totally rule it out but possibly could . Has anyone any ideas, i wondered if its anything to do with the diesel pump and if so how much and whats involved in repairing it pls ? Thank's

dangerous doug
i am no mechanic but i belive white smoke means its burning oil, piston rings or turbo maby?
mel
Thanks Doug, I think turbo is ok so was looking for other possible causes ??
Jon W
White smoke is water i think you will find. So either contaminated fuel. try draining the filter bowl see if water comes out. Or it could be the head gasket letting water into the combustion chamber. If you are buying this make sure you search for the disco buyers guide as there can be a lot of hidden nasties, i.e. rust traps to look out for. Pete Attryde
Thanks Doug,I think turbo is ok so was looking for other possible causes ?? Besides smoking does it go all right above 2000 rpm. White smoke can be un-burnt diesel or as Jon says steam. Black would be excessive burnt diesel. Oil smoke tends to be blue. It could be injection timing or faulty injectors or a failed head gasket.
