tblandy
My arb compressor has stopped and i carnt see any problems??? What happened was the relay got a shunt with the waffle, which cracked the casing and sent the compressor running constant, so we hit the stop, had a fiddle with the relay and all was well it had stoped, but now it wont start? Tryed a new relay, the pressure switches on the compressor just click when you flich the switches, tryed a new pressure switch still no luck, it has live and earth to the compressor??? Anyone any ideas? Cheers Ty
JimAttrill
ARB compressors are cr@p. They all fail sooner rather than later. Get a good replacement, Thompsons are good (and reliable too).
tblandy
so theres no hope of mending it or it being an electrical fault?
JimAttrill
You can try, we usually throw them in the bin. They normally fail because of an air leak that causes the compressor to run all the time. Basically the same as Disco II air springs. You can get excellent replacements. I say this because I don't think you should replace your ARB with another ARB. I am certain that someone will be along to tell you what is the best value for money replacement you can get in the UK. SteveG
so theres no hope of mending it or it being an electrical fault? put a 12v feed straight to compressor and see if it works then. Steve
Boothy
Jim, What's this Thompson one you refer to ? I got through 2 ARB compressors last year and totally agree with your CR*P comment and was thinking of Viar but they seem expensive, it's only for2 ARB's. TomG
Yep, went through 2 standard ARB compressors - motors on both just died, maybe they don't like being mounted outside & took forever to air up the tyres. Converted to an A/C compressor 130psi with a small regulator to drop down to 90psi for the ARBs which has been superb.
robhybrid
The motor of the arb compressor is a permanent magnet type. I have seen the magnets come loose from the outer casing either due to rust(water damage) or exessive heat been from running constant for too long. I have managed to dismantle repair and rebuild one of these but I dont think I could justfy doing this for a customer as it takes too long to charge for compared to getting a new pump. I think the new arb compressors with the smaller tank are ideal for switching the diff locks but not ideal for regularly pumping up tyres. I think that people should consider some sort of secondary water proofing/damage prevention (mount inside a sturdy bottom vented box) when they install these outside. Adrian Turner
I've had the same Arb compressor for the last 3 years, mounted outside on the cage in a covered bottom open box and never had a problem, i've got a new smaller Arb unit for the next build............. but i dont inflate tyre's with mine! I'd get another one and look at how your mounting/covering it.
