200TDI conversion questions (1968 Series IIa)

Hi all,

I’m currently in the process of installing a Discovery 200TDI engine into my SWB series IIa. I’ve read a few threads on carrying out this conversion on series and looking for some opinion on the engine mounts.

Which are the best to fit?

The current 2.25 petrol engine mounts or the Discovery (1) 200TDI engine mounts.

Can someone please also tell me what the stud size is from the engine flywheel cover to the gearbox (tap & drill bit size)

Any info would be great.

Cheers

Gary

Gary,

I used the Disco mounts, but it does require cutting and welding to the chassis. If your chassis is not galvanized and you have the ability, it might be worth it. Otherwise, just use the stock mounts with the Defender 200TDI rubbers.

The tap size IIRC was M10. Here are a couple of threads on how to deal with the cover to gearbox... http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/200tdiconversion.htm and http://www.glencoyne.co.uk/200di2.htm

There are numerous threads for install into a series IIa and series III... Enjoy.

I used the Series mounts with 19J rubbers, and have no vibration problems at all. It avoids all cutting and welding anhd assures correct engine and transmission alignment with the chassis and axles.

I'm going the same way for the same reasons, it seems to be the norm for everyone I've spoken to. The only complaint is the TDI is noisy but heard nothing about negative vibes man :D
