gwsrich
yet again back on here searching for an answer, 1993 disco 1 3.9 v8 while driving today after about 15 minutes in start stop traffic the oil warning light starts to blink at me, when rev'd a little over tickover light extingishes, Got home left car for 1 hour light fine but again after 20 minutes light back on again. could this just be carp oil breaking down?, a dud sensor? or kaput oil pump?. checked oil and that was ok between the lines on the dip stick. Is oil sensor failing a common problem on this car? Cheers RICH

disco_al
first what grade are you using? second, odds are with being in stop start traffic, expecially in hot weather the oil will get thinner.
scube
If it is oil related V8 is an old design engine and I always put a good quality 20/50 mineral oil in my range rover

Aragorn
20w50?! thats gonna be like treacle! Also must admit that i've never seen a good quality 20w50, its always bargain basement stuff, that doesnt even meet the modern quality standards! In traffic the oil temperature rises which makes the pressure fall as the oil viscosity drops (it gets thinner) I suggest it might be an idea to get a pressure guage fitted, as the oil pressure light usually only comes on at ~3psi or something silly, so unless the old oil was especially contaminated with petrol you'll probably find there are other issues here, as if the engines only managing 3psi theres something wrong with it. In our A4 the oil temp when driving normally sits around 90c (it has a water to oil cooler) and the pressure at idle is around 1.2bar (which is low anyway because its done 185k, it should be over 1.5bar) in traffic though, especially on hot days the oil temp climbs to 100+ and the pressure drops <1bar, sometimes as low as 0.5Bar if its particularly warm and in very slow stop start traffic. This really isnt normal, and it does it becuase the 185k oil pump is worn, and the bearing clearances arent as they once were, but at least having the gauge means you can see when it drops that low and raise the RPMs to bring the pressure back up! Bowie69
Duckhams 'Green' Q-grade always seemed like a good quality 20w50 to me, used it in many engines, worn or ones requiring it and it was great stuff, lasted well, and kept the engine quiet even when really giving it the beans... The V8's an old engine, I wouldn't be putting stuff like Mobil 1 in it for instance....
gwsrich
hello all, i found out the oil hadn't been replaced for approx 2 years when i drained the oil it was like water and the oil filter had the date 10/05 written on it so guess it was in need of new filter and oil, as the engine has done 217k miles thought it would be benefitical to use 20w50 as its definatley worn to a degree.
