carpenter-dj
just a quick pic of my freelander off road. went round "Houndtor Ridge" Dartmoor, any one been before? or know anywhere similar?
Matt S
Nice pic How long is the route you took? It looks like a good one. There's a few good solid (short, ie 1-2 mile) lanes here in east Devon, some that will test a standard Freelander nicely (not too crazy, just a bit of fun) Cheers Matt
carpenter-dj
very good little route, probally around 3-4 miles, couple of tricky parts, steep up hills over loose rocks, river crossing, i chickened out there and took the bridge (very narrow). Mockery
More Freelander off-road! Hope nobody minds, I'm new here and thought I'd share some of my off-road freelander pics here. What a great little car! Yes, we made it up this hill! Here she is up the top...
Mockery
More pics! On a popular local powerline track The Pinnacles, near Cervantes WA Disco Retro - this cleared strip is an unnecessary new highway under construction right across some favourite 4WD trails. Mike the Bike
Great pictures, most be fun being able to push her capabilities. I was ab;e to this year with 30 cm of snow falling overnight in London! Was one of the few cars on the road the following day, took her for some long 4 wheel power slides in a vacant car park. FLR100
Nice photo's, shame there all fake because there's no way a freelander could get to the posistions they were at without being towed there by a propper 4wd !

FLR100
FLR100, go play with the traffic on the M25!! Just because that's all you can do in your freelander!!
Llanigraham
I suggest you ask some of the guys from 4x4 Response Wales where I've put my Freelander's in the past, and that includes getting through a section that the Disco behind me got stuck!! I presume that you don't drive a Freelander and probably have never done so either, but immediately post a "knocking" response because we drive a different vehicle that doesn't have the same set up as other Land Rovers and therefore you presume it cannot be as good. The Freelander was never designed to have the off road capability of a Defender or Disco, but was designed to cope with fairly severe situations which it does very well. We would all probably agree it doesn't cope with ruts as it doesn't have the ground clearance, but with careful route planning it is often possible to get around these areas, and in some areas it can actually be better than it's bigger BROTHERS, especially on soft sand or wet grass. Just remember that it still has a green LAND ROVER badge on the front!!
Naks
I suggest you ask some of the guys from 4x4 Response Wales where I've put my Freelander's in the past, and that includes getting through a section that the Disco behind me got stuck!! the 'Freeloader' is one of the most under-rated 4x4's ever produced. A few years ago, my gf got bored. She loaded her freeloader with camping gear, 3 friends and went driving around Botswana (on road tyres). They crossed the Mkgadigadi Pans without deflating tyres, and got stuck only once in a damp patch. They got out of it by laying their firewood (all of 5-6 logs) under ONE front wheel. Once that wheel got some traction, they were in the clear. Needless to say, if that were a Defender/Disco they had been driving, they probably would still be there Although if you've never seen the Makgadigadi salt pans and how vehicles can get stuck there, you probably will not appreciate this story The only reason NOT to get a freeloader is the build quality & reliability, although most of these issues were fixed with the facelift. In SA they were coming out of the BMW assembly plant not even completed - some were missing complete brake units, others engines, etc. In this part of the world, it has a rep as the worst LR ever produced. Chill out a bit! i'm only playing with you so no need to take it so seriously it's not like you design'd and built the freelander so no need to take it so personaly! i have owned and driven just about most of the LR range and it has been on road and off road driving and sorry to say this particular model is the least performing LR in durability and off road performance, not just my opinion but a fact
Llanigraham
So by your own admission you don't own a Freelander and have never driven one then. But then of course the Defenders or Discovery's are totally perfect and never have any faults what so ever. Let me see...... Td5 oil contamination in ECU loom Defender water leaks Rusty bulkheads and I could go on. And these are just some of the things my friends who have them tell me about, but I don't immediately knock that product, which is what you have done by your posting. As I said, the Freelander was not designed to be an out and out off road vehicle, but was designed to give some ability off road, which it does very succesfully for most people who want it. If I wanted or needed more off road ability I "might" have bought a Disco, but I don't need that, so I didn't. Can I suggest that unless you have some constructive point to make you go and frequent somewhere you "might" think you know what you are talking about. Sorry to pee on your bonfire but i currently own 5 freelanders and have attempted to drive them off road but unfortunatley after they keep getting stuck on the simplest of terrain i simply don't bother, i rekon i can drive a ford escort to the same place i can a freelander! now shall we take a look at the faults of the freelander? 1.8 petrol (headgasket failure) and there is probally very few that have not needed a replacement viscous couplings sieze up transfer box's go bang! rear diff's whine like a dog! window cable mechanism snap and fail dashboard clocks rarley show all the digits sunroofs hardley ever work map reading lights stop working i'm getting bored now as i can't be botherd to type anymore but do any of them sound familiar? personaly i think freelanders are excellent if your off-roading adventures are parking on a grass field at a car boot sale! Mockery
Oi, guys! There's plenty of other places to argue about the offroad suitability of the Freelander, its reliability or lack thereof... Do it in another thread. This thread is for pictures of freelanders offroad, and a few folks have some pretty good ones. Keep them coming!
