jamesvfr
Hi all, got a bit of a problem Got a 4 speed manual rangie which im putting some 37" tyres on but ive heard that 1st gear in low isnt low enough due to the tyre size Is there any way of lowering the low box ratio without fitting a crawler box? I know if it was a LT77 + LT230 it can be done The other option is diffs, ive got a pair of series 3 axles with diffs, would i just be able to use the series 3 diffs to lower the ratio? Cheers James

bishbosh
You cannot lower the low box ratio in an LT230 unless you have one of a handful of custom LT230's that Ashcrofts built a few years ago. High watio is a different matter, but all LT230's have the same low range gearing.
jamesvfr
Will a series 3 diff take the same level of abuse as a rangie diff though? Im looking to run arb's front + back next year, will the locker fit the series 3 diff + rangie diff or are they different? i dont realy want to buy arb's then have to sell for another set James
clbarclay
I would go for different ratio diffs, these will at least reduce the stess on the propshaft and transphere box from 37" tyres. Series diffs are by all acounts weaker than RRC diffs and RRC diffs arn't the strongest of items to start with. If you have the series diffs already then you can try them, just don't be surpriesed if they die. As an alternative to strengtheing LR axles, another option is axle swaps. There is a wide choice of alternative axles that are stronger and provied better suited ratios, though some are more paratical/affordable to fit to a LR than others. zardos
Check out Ashcrofts pages http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/part_13.html Give them a call to see what they can do.
FridgeFreezer
If you're going 37's and think you may want to go bigger, I'd look at axle swaps before investing heavily in your current axles as 37 seems to be the upper limit of what anything Rover will live with.
