D2 V8 anti-freeze/coolant change

As i've only had the disco V8 for a couple of weeks i'm now slowly going through things & because of the cold weather (some nice hard frosts) i'm wanting to change the anti-freeze/coolant so I know it's at full strength. Apart from putting the heater onto hot is there any other bleeding of the coolant system on the 4L V8 ? I noticed a bleed plug on the top rad hose & wasn't sure if it really needed undoing as I would hate to end up with a leak from here & have to get a new pipe :(

Yes it does. Mine had a new rad in a couple of weeks ago(leaking around the end tanks, as usual with D2 rads) and it was mainly bled through the bleed point in the hose.

Rave says:

5. Release top hose from retaining lugs on the fan

cowl, leaving the hose to rest on the lugs.

6. Remove bleed screw from top hose.

7. Unclip the bleed hose from the battery box.

8. Remove expansion tank from its mounting

bracket. Slowly fill the expansion tank with

coolant, approx. 4 litres (7 pt).

9. Raise the expansion tank approx. 20 cm (8 in)

vertically, coolant will drain into the system.

10. Refill the coolant expansion tank until a steady

flow of coolant is emitted from the bleed hole.

11. Fit the bleed screw then, with the expansion

tank still raised, continue filling the system until

the coolant level reaches the base of the

expansion tank filler neck.

12. Fit expansion tank filler cap, fit the expansion

tank to its mountings and clip the bleed hose to

the battery box.

13. Refit the top hose into its lugs on the fan cowl.

14. Start and run engine until normal operating

temperature is reached, and check for leaks.

15. Switch off engine and allow to cool.

16. Check for leaks and top-up coolant to cold level

After I had been running around in mine and it had done a couple of warm up / cool down cycles I had to add about another half a litre of coolant so I guess there must have been a little bit of air in it. Now stabilised and running fine.

The new engines use the pink OAT antifreeze. You can probably use the old stuff with a thorough flushing but don't mix the two sorts as apparently the sky will fall on your head and demons will flay your behind with little forks.
