Stressing the CV

Mack

Recommended Posts

Many people using wheel spacers or smaller backspace wheels tend to adjust the steering in order to get better turning circle (As I did). Does this exert unwanted stress on CV joints or steering box (now is leaking  )?

thanks

should be fine on the CV's, but with increased track you will apply slightly more leverage on your steering components and wheel bearings. But unless you've gone crazy and fitted something really wide you shouldn't have an issue. If the box is leaking it could be just general wear and tear, do you hold it at full lock a lot?

Yes you can over stress CV's like this.

If you fit the spacers for the purpose of winding in the steering stops to achieve more lock you run the risk of locking out the cv joints on full lock. this will cause premature wear and if you apply too much power at these angles then ultimately failure.

What he said,

The greater the working angle on the CV joint, the more stress its under.

Probably one of the reasons why landrover gave most of their vehicles a rubbish turning circle in an attempt to give the poor things a chance at surviving more than 30 seconds.

believe it or not, the manual says do not hold full lock for more than 1 minute!

That's because there's no cooler in the PS hydaulic circuit and the fluid could boil (but bearing in mind LR spec their vehicles based on extremes, this means it probably only happens in a Himalayan heatwave!)
