Removing defender wings

Recommended Posts

I am trying to remove my defender wing, it is a 1985 110,

I can not get to the 4 bolts across the back which sercure it to the bulkhead because the snorkel air intake is in the way,

Do i have to remove the heater box to remove the air intake stuff so i can get to the 4 bolts or is there another way?

thank you

Been there, done that. It's possible. Not nice but possible.

The wheel arch. Lots of button fasteners with a plastic peg up middle. Give them a tap with a very thin drift, pop rivet shanks are good. You'll be able to save 90% of the buttons but 90% of the center pegs will disappear. Again, pop rivet shanks are quite good as temporary replacement. Seem to remember there's also a screw at bottom near bulkhead. You'll not take it alive, you could try but it'd save time just to set about it with angle grinder and carefully take head off.

Yes i have done that, but there is some plastic cowling type stuff that goes from the top air intake and the side air intake which block the 4 bolts, and i do not fancy removing the heater matrix box to get that out

you need to extract the side intake [air fliter air intake] duct, prise out the grille & undo the 5 screws, push the duct inwards & IIRC twist out through the side hole, no need to move the heater intake duct if your only taking the side panel off, if the wing top is coming off as well, remove the heater air intake grille 7 screws & then undo the screws holding the duct in place & pull it forward to disconnect from heater unit.
