Buying a Discovery

Looking to buy a 2oo or 300 Discovery. What do I need to look for on these models when viewing a possible purchase?

chassis, foot wells, and boot floor are the hot spots...

as said rust over and above all (well within reason) mechanicals

just make sure it drives smooth through all gears and revs steering does as it should then look for rust EVERYWHERE

Also check the water system isn't pressurising, both are good at overheating requiring a head removal/possible replacement

Hi Wellsy,

As said, mainly rust. Other stuff can be fixed but rust can spell the end for a Disco.

Main bits to check are:

• Inside front wings
  
• Sills both sides
  
• Boot floor
  
• Rear wheel arches on 5-door models
  

Check under carpets in the boot and front footwells for dampness.

Chassis tend to be quite good AFAIK, worst place will be the rear body mounts probably.

In addition to what's already been stated, rear body cross member, body mounts all of them, rear wheel arches, don't ask me how I know.

There isn't a sound series 1 Discovery in the South-East any more! For too much salt on the roads for that!
