Disco-Ron
Bolt on my HD bumper..... I thought i was being clever and bought brand new bolts, and captive plates..... however, as my new bumoer is 5mm thick, and the originals aren't, the captive plates won't sit flat on the bottom of the bumper and let me get the bolts through..... How does everyone else manage it..
Retroanaconda
I forced my captive plates over the thicker steel, and then used thin screwdrivers to position the plate underneath while feeding the bolt in from above. In future, I think I will just weld a nut onto the bottom plate for ease
jasonslaphead
I had this problem once before and ended up throwing the clip thing that holds the plate onto the bumper and pulling out the rubber bung in the front of the chassis where the jacking point is and sticking a finger in there to try to hold the nut plate in place. Its very fiddly but it works. Alternatively my new firstfour bumper had double sided sticky tape on the nut plate just to hold it in place so you could get the bolts started. Disco-Ron
aha.............. i can see a lump of gaffer tape being used............... i did wonder about taking the bung out, but got soooooooooooo pee'd off, i gave up and came in.... Cheers!
landroversforever
What I did was take off the springy plate bit. then put the bolt through the right hand hole, holding one end of the retaining plate screw the bolt in, then drop the other bolt in the other side... Using the first bolt, turn the plate round to the right place and screw in second bolt
Disco-Ron
So, in short, it's basically a pain in the arse job that most people find awkward...........LOL.... Maybe its time someone came up with a solution, seeing as there are SO many defenders with non standard bumpers out there............... landroversforever
Yes! it was a pain, until I worked out why the spring wasnt holding it right, and then developed my method. All works great now
errol209
I guess the original reason LR adopted this truly horrid arrangement was to "manage" the usual "tolerances"TM on the chassis and bumper without having a captive nut fixed to the bumper? landroversforever
yeh, the captive nuts would probably have ended up on the side of the chassis rails, or in the case of the friday afternoon chassis'... at the other end of the chassis
