Thys
I have been trying to find out if the two gear boxes are fitted with breather pipes/breathers or not. All I can find on my 1996 300 Tdi auto are the two breather pipes fitted to the front and rear differentials. The dipstick of the auto box keeps on moving slightly upwards. I then pushed the dipstick home and clamped the two retaining clips. The dipstick then stayed in position, but after a trip the ATF leaks at the one couplings to the auto box cooler. This tells me there is a pressure built up inside the box, which is normal as the ATF heats up, but the fact that the dip stick gets pushed up/out means there must shurely be some breather system on the auto box that is blocked. I tried but cannot see anything, and the auto box manual I have does not show any detail. My TC is performing perfect and no leaks, but shurely that should also have a breather? I would like to hear from other Disco 1 300 Tdi/V8 auto owners on this one. Regards
Davedef90
IIRC the breather for the autobox is on the N/S almost to the rear of the box. It sits about 3/4 of the way up the side of the box. Don't have a pic and it's hard to explain. If you put you hand in the general area you should be able to feel it
wizard
Hi Thys At the back of the engine block you should see two black plastic pipes poking up and bent over. These are the two breather pipes. regards wizard
SPendrey
Hmmm, interesting. I'll go check mine too, since my filler plug keeps popping out too... no noticeable issue of affect on driving though.
lawrence
Just like everyone has said almost on top of the gearbox, A real pain to find, did mine a while ago, just use lots of light. the breather is comected to about 2 foot of black pipe that runs along the top of the gearbox. its meets up the breather from the transfer box aswell. SPendrey
Assuming I can find/reach them... do I just pull them off at the gear box end, and blow through from the top?
Bowie69
They unbolt, 13mm IIRC, with a banjo and a copper washer either side. Both the banjo bolt and the banjo itself block up really easily, only way I could clear mine was to detatch it, clean with a solvent and then blow compressed air back down from the engine bay (well snorkel, where I have extended them to). Hope you have better luck
V8defender90
In the manual for the discovery, landrover max wading depth was 300mm. I found my gearbox breather was a short length running along the top on the gearbox and the transfer was running up the bulk head.
