RangeyRover
A mate has transferred a 3.9 hotwire V8 into a bowler. The engine was taken from a working range Rover, which was driven around for a couple of days to be sure that the engine was good. After the transfer into the bowler, the engine will not run well. The airflow meter has to be removed for the engine to start, and the exhaust absolutely stinks of petrol. The ECU has been changed for a known good one, with the same results. the airflow meter has also been changed for a known good one, with the same results. I will be going armed with the 3.9 diagnostic manual from this forum, my money is on a problem with one of the Coolant or fuel temperature sensors. I am pretty sure that the sense from the ignition coil is working or otherwise the engine would not run at all. I will be checking the timing at the same time. any ideas from the forum that I should pay attention to? Thanks RR
FridgeFreezer
If it's overly rich all the time, suspect temperature sensor.
RangeyRover
I thought so too, Jon. Both temp sensors at 3Kohm at loom end at approx 15C Ignition sense line at 10Kohm? I thought that resistor was less than that? Anyway, actually runs well when you start with AFM off, then reconnect. Not too rich in my estimation, (smells like mine) Advance was a bit low, set to 8 now and goes well on it. Restarts fine when properly hot. All other checks good. Does same with another ECU. Loom has been changed with no difference. Blocked off idle stepper hose, made no difference. Fault description: hunts massively once at startup, then stalls. If warm hunts three times then stalls. My oddball theory is that the ignition sense line isnt picking up enough until revs raised, which starting without AFM does Then ECU seeS, it sorts the idle out and away. Didnt have time to check ignition line at ECU, as plug awkward where mounted.
Hybrid_From_Hell
was it a cat V8 now non cat and wrong back pressures ? Is the road speed transducer fitted ? Whats the exhaust system stylee ? Nige
Dave W
I'd start by checking the fuel pressure and fuel "circuit". What fuel pump has he fitted and where (in tank, external, swirl pot) ? Has the regulator been plumbed in properly and is the feed back to the tank/swirl pot clear and no back pressure ?
