chadler
I've just installed a temperature sender in my LT230Q transfer case. This replaces a blanking plug on the left hand side of the casing, at the level of the input gear/PTO. I know that this is the factory location for models fitted with a temp sender, but what puzzles me is that surely this is well above the level of the oil? I know that the oil level in my transfer box is correct at the usual fill/level plug, but when removing this blanking plug no oil was released. How can the temp sender read the oil temp if it is above the oil level?
dailysleaze
I've got one of these and I imagine it gets covered in oil flicking off the input gear when moving
reb78
It's a funny way to measure the temp though. Not at all accurate.
chadler
I wonder whether there is a shelf or a catch reservoir up there so that oil will pool, that might make the temperature reading a bit more accurate? Anyone who has seen inside a transfer box know for sure? Does it also mean that the input gear and PTO are splash lubricated and not bathed in oil? thanks
tacr2man
input gear and pto are only splash its not a pumped gearbox .
dailysleaze
It's inline with the rearmost set of gears, so not actually splashed by the input gear itself. I did remove the temp sender at one point and it's just a threaded hole in the case. The input gear splines are splash lubricated, so maybe it gets covered in enough oil? But is still not a very good design. The Rocky Mountain extended capacity sump has a blank hole that can be tapped for a temp sender. Then it would be constantly immersed. "NOTE:Still uses transfer box drain plug but there is a blank boss in the casting that you can drill and tap to add temp sender if desired."
