DEANO3528
One for the 4 pot specialists out there. Guy I know has a dead Turbo 2.5 engine: One piston has broken up. I know where to lay my hands on a good normally asthmatic engine so as the quoted CR is the same for both lumps at 21:1 the question has to be: Will the head, turbo etc from the dead lump work on the N/A one? Not lookig for specualtion I'm afraid, just a yes or no if you have either done it or know it will or won't work! TIA
western
it probaly would work but wouldn't last as long as a TD block, I'd forget that & look for a Tdi engine.
DEANO3528
I did suggest that but we are talking about a tight budget here as usual.
Guest diesel_jim
IIRC correctly the internals of the non turbo are different to the turbo version. different spec pistons, different cooling and the oil return pipe for the turbo. I'm sure Les will chime in soon, as he's stripped several of these and become rather, intimate, with them...

BogMonster
...and the Turbo version is not reknowned for bombproofness, thus "less reliable than a Turbo" would have to be cheap to be worthwhile
Les Henson
I don't know that you could do this on a tight budget. So many parts are different. You would need Injector pump, maybe injectors, turbo and manifold, downpipe, assorted pipework, and pistons. You would have to drill and tap for oil pressure supply and drain for the turbo bearing. It would be interesting to 'see' it done, but there's no real point in it in my opinion. Les.
DEANO3528
That's fine, thanks. More againsts than fors. I'll suggest he buys the N/A and sticks that in 'as is'. Less than 20 hp in it anyway although torque figure is way down. Cheers for the replies.
Turbocharger
If you've got PLENTY of time on your hands and a real lack of cash, the 2.5NAD pistons would go in the TD block, so long as one bore wasn't knacked by the passage of many outward-bound piston parts. The performance won't be quite right and you'd to well to watch the EGT, although there's no cheap way to do this - wind the fuel down until there's no black smoke and see if you've got more power than the NAD? As was said, perhaps better than the NAD on it's own but to be honest, it's a pretty sound engine in it's own right and, while not impressive, does exactly what it says on the tin and will do so in the face of considerable abuse.
