zim
Morning, On my truck i've got a block heater. But being american it's 110v. About 1.5kw. I was wondering what would be the easiest way to plug it in here ? Could i get one of the yellow transformer boxes that most industrial places use and make up a lead that plugs into it that my heater will plug into ? This is what i've got : Could i use one of these : If so, what sort of size / rating ? I'm assuming i can cut up a lead which plugs into this and put my own american style plug on the end ? Cheers Gordon
stuck
Can't think of any reason why not. You'd need one withna rating of 2 KVA or >. Do you already have one G?
zim
No i don't have one.

zim
I'm sat with a non starting truck at the moment Awaiting a diagnostic laptop / scanner. So no rush.... Driving the p38 around instead. Seem to have a glow plug problem (they're still getting 10v when the keys are out the ignition!) G
Superpants
Playing devils advocate would it not be cheaper to replace the element than buy a transformer?
zim
I'll get in trouble here for saying it's an american spec Ford not LR . So for the hassle / cost of doing that i'd just leave it. Whereas a transformer is relatively simple and i'm sure i can find one cheap enough, as well as being able to use it for other tools should the need arise. Superpants
Fair enough- thought it worth asking the obvious!!!
Night Train
If you are in Manchester I probably have a 110V transformer tucked away. I will have a look for you see if I have a spare 2kw one.
Deej
2KVA site transformer will be fine for a 1.5KW block heater as it will have a high power factor, and as you say it may come in handy for 110V tools in the future. Just chop off the US style plug and replace it with one of these:

HoSS
Using a 110 site transformer will also be safer, as it isolates. Should there be a short circuit to the block, you wont get zapped.
Phil Hancock
Site transformers are center tap earth so the greatest voltage to earth will be + or - 55volts.
