identifying gearboxes an transfer box's

Right, sorry for all the threads lately but I'm relatively new to the LR scene and know not so much on them...

Here we go, how do identify the gearbox on my 90 (2.5 TD)?? as it is dripping oil from every where..

Also are the defender and discovery gearboxes for 200 tdi's the same as there is one in a local breakers and if I use a disco gearbox is everything a straight swap over??

Also Ive read that there are 2 different transfer box final drive ratio's, how do I determine which one is which? as id want the one the one that is lowest (slightly better top speed) which is the 1.2 one??

Another small one is my back axle has a weep that looks like is coming straight out the casing, not the usual places like the bungs/breathers or diff plate...anyone else had this sort of issue where the diff housing has rotted away?

On a 2.5 TD it will be the LT77 gearbox :)

Disco gearboxes will not fit without putting the gear levers in a strange place. They put the sticks into the seatbox due to a different mounting and tailcasting on the gearbox.

Transferboxes... there are 3 4 ratios AFAIK: 1.6 which yours probably has with the age, 1.4 (the normal defender one) and the 1.2 which is the discovery ratio. There is also a 1:1 ratio! Your 2.5TD is going to struggle to pull the 1.2 especially if you have reasonable sized tyres. If you're only on 205s then it might do it.

I haven't myself, but have seen some very rusty axle casings. Has the vehicle been used for launching boats? as that would cause more corrosion on the rear axle than normal.

You should be able to find your current ratio from this list:

A disco box in a defender will bring your gearstick up as in the pic below. My mate put one in his 90 (it was cheap) and quite likes the positioning of it but you are unable to fit a middle seat and will probably have to make your own cubby box. You also have to fabricate some kind of cover for the levers.

I would stick with a defender box personally.

With your axle, stick a picture up, someone will be able to tell you if it looks repairable.
