lrseries3
Hi, i am thinking of installing a 5 speed gearbox into my series project. It will be driven by a rover v8 3.5 liter carb. Does anyone know a gearbox that will mate the rover v8 AND the series 3 transferbox WITHOUT losing the PTO ability? i know ascroft has some kits for the lt 77 and r380 but they lose the PTO. greets Rob
Gremlin
You will loose pto with a series TC and lt 77, unless you find a bottom pto. The other option is lt77 + lt230 with associated pto.
ejparrott
If you need the PTO that bad, convert an LT230 to 2wd/4wd and use a defender PTO
FridgeFreezer
What he said. The 2WD conversion is pretty easy, although you can do without it entirely.
TheRecklessEngineer
Or just run it in 4wd? Mines done enough miles like that to be able to say that the universe wont end if you put permenant drive thronugh a series front axle.
Scottthebigbloke
I put an r380 into my series 2, i used a 'stumpy' short bellhousing gearbox with and lt230 transfer case, have to get a defender handbrake as its a cable one, also a bit of chassis cutting and welding,i removed the gearbox x-member which means putting gearbox mounts between the chassis rails, also have to remake the propshafts, but worth the effort. Jon White
Yup - I'd agree - just run permanent 4wd and use and lt230 and associated pto. The 2wd conversion kit is pants anyway. I've been running permanent 4wd now for many years. Jon
