Tiger
My Defender is getting hot quickly and losing coolant. Having a look around it looks like the alternator has brown stains on it. Is this the P gasket then? Leaky pump? Big job?
Alan Broadbent
I had this a while ago. Leaks and seepage can sometimes be hard to trace as the under bonnet heat evaporates coolant. After having replaced ancient radiator, hoses and water pump gasket, I eventually traced it to the pump spindle. The give away was the spray pattern under the bonnet. At least I now have a new cooling system. Alan
steve b
If its the P gasket you will see coolant stains down the front of the block , under the manifolds where the timing belt case and block face joint line is. Not a complicated job , but you do strip the front of the engine down to get to it , the 2 things that can cause probs are un-doing the crank bolt and removing the crank pulleys. It could be from the waterpump bearings so check that too hth Steveb
minimaquinas
hi it is more than likely to be the water pump i have become a bit of a master at doing the water pump on mine it should take no more than 30 mins to replace but be sure to buy a quality pump hence all my practice hth brian
Tiger
I'll get a Britpart pattern one, I've heard they are the best.
CwazyWabbit
I think you'll be able to fix the old one tbh all you need to do is melt some chocolate over the leaking parts, will then be as good as a new britpart pump

Reiny
Quinton Hazel pumps are excellent. I believe that's the brand Land Rover uses.
