greenstream
As per tittle ;-) I have purchased some parts for putting a RV8 into a series, using the series gearbox. There is a flywheel which is supposed to be from a SD1 - any of you who know how to verify this ? Morten
mickeyw
AFAIK the SD1 flywheels were lightweight aluminium rather than the normal hefty LR steel versions. I seem to recall the clutch was smaller diameter than 90/110 clutch, but same as a series 4 cyl.
Fatboy
Don't think they were alloy. SD1 is thinner, the same width as the starter ring. The Range Rover one is twice the width of the ring gear.
missingsid
SD1 are thinner than a RRC one and they will take the correct size clutch. There may be other considerations though. SD1 manual cars are considered rare to get hold of (my engine was but I did not know about them it at the time) I did have a modified RRC flywheel anyway. The RRC flywheel is significantly heavier offering a much better drive off road. My S1 will climb over a log bridige (across ways) at tickover even seemingly comming to a halt after dropping into and climbimg out of a gap without stalling. I doubt that an SD1 flywheel would do this. On the road if giving it a raz changing up the RRC flywheel is a pain as the engine revs will not drop between gears which gives a huge kick in the back but knackers the gearbox. So which is best? it Depends on if you want a fast(?) road car or great offroad car? Hope this helps? Marc.
FridgeFreezer
SD1 flywheel you don't go "hnnngg" when you pick it up, and it makes the car much easier to stall when bimbling round off-road (that was my experience anyway). RR one is, as said above, about an inch thick in the main part, visibly thicker than the ring gear (toothed) section.
