Crimping tool for 50mm lugs

Thought it best to resurrect a thread with plenty of good info than start from scratch.

I would like to buy the fleabay hydraulic crimper that has been mentioned throughout this thread but was unable to find the link, would it be this one?

I notice some say that they can crimp ferules onto wire also, would this tool be capable of doing that, for example some new tailgate straps for the 90?

I think for the relatively small tailgate straps, you would be OK using this hydraulic tool.

However I would be hesitant to crimp a wire winch rope, as the dies in this kit are intended for a single strand, therefore round crimp. (Yes I realise it makes a hexagon crimp, but I hope you get my point).

Two runs of winch cable would be more of a figure 8 or at least ovalled shape, and I wouldn't want to trust a tool designed for round crimping to produce a correct and secure enough joint for dangling my truck over a ravine.

Boris - that's basically the same hydraulic crimper I've got and it's pretty good, certainly good enough for electrics & tailgate supports but I would never trust something safety critical like a winch cable to it.

Only pain with it is the dies aren't quite the right size, I ended up having to use/abuse the 25mm die for 35mmsq battery cable as the 35mm one was too loose. Next time round I'll probably take a grinder to one of the less used dies and make it into a 30mm one, or just make a new one.

But expensive.

Yeah, given the chinese ones start at £10 it's a bit hard to justify £100 unless you do a heck of a lot of crimping.

Fridge I found exactly the same thing last night when crimping 35mm sq winch motor cables.

Sounds like it's ok for the money then, I am planning to crimp 40mm2 leccy cable so hopefully that should take the slack in the 35mm dies.

Don't worry it won't be used for any safety critical crimping on wire rope, more for making check straps for hinged items in another project etc.

When you have done 4 x gigglepin twin motor winches and 2 x low line winches, plus all the isolators, solenoids and battery connectors in 70mm2 there are quite a lot of crimps to winch equip 2 vehicles

I've got asset of ebay crimpers and as already said, they work well but sizes ned some experimenting with before doing jobs.

I tried them on some wire rope jobs and although they worked, they weren't quite as neat as hoped.

Bought the proper rope crimping tools and they did a much nicer looking (maybe stronger too?) job.
