scottwilson1912 Posted February 3, 2013 Share Posted February 3, 2013 Hello All So i shall begin, My modified 300tdi disco has developed the Canary under the bonnet syndrome...Ive searched loads of forums for pointers on this and still its squeels Its started last weekend on a simple drive to town and my 1st thoughts were aux belt needs replacing, well ive now changed the belt, bought a new tensioner and still its there, so i decided to change the water pump/P gasket etc hoping it was that..that job was finished this morning and STILL the canary chirps away under my bonnet...ive even tried the Penny trick to no avail.....And yes its only squeeling under load same as ususal....Any ideas would be greatfully recieved...Oh the next move is fit a genuine DAYCO belt as the new one i fitted was from Gates... scottwilson1912 Posted February 4, 2013 Author Share Posted February 4, 2013 it will be the front bearing on your alternator Thanks for both the replies...Not sure what to try next, My local Landrover specialist swears itll be either the tensioner or the belt. so i will have to see how it behaves with the Dayco belt fitted...Not yet prepared to spend £100 on a new alternator .......This appears to be a common problem with 300Tdi but no one seems to have the definative answer,,, Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Thys Posted February 4, 2013 Share Posted February 4, 2013 Did you replace the aux belt (air con compressor belt) tentioner or the altenator/waterpump/power steering belt (main belt) tensioner? There are 3 bearings that can be the cause, one on the AC belt tentioner, the AC belt idler pulley and the main belt tentioner. Then you have to make sure the poly-V belts has all the pulleys lined up properly. The poly-V betls hates even the slightest mis allingment. Another cause may be the main tentioner mounting shaft bush, if that is warn the main belt tentione tries to ever so slightly twist the main belt. The most reliable poly-v belts are the Dyco or Continental poly-v belts. A foreigh make can be the caude of the screech if out of spec. Last but not the least: on the crankshafr pulley there is a dust cap. If this steel dust cap is not fully round, as a result of a tool damage or stone, the shirp will be there but more of a sharp cyclic chirp........... Thanks for the reply....Dont have air con on my disco so its just the one main belt round the tensioner/water pump/alternator/PAS pump etc....ive just put on a new Dayco genuine belt and although its quieter its still there, so thats 3 belts its had a new main tensioner plus water pump......might try and clean the pulleys with electric spray cleaner and a wire brush. It just seems really odd that after nearly 2 years of owning the old girl its just started happening and i put a new main belt on the 1st week i bought it with no issues....im perplexed but do appreciate peoples thoughts on this. scott Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It was the water pump until fully warmed up, which I replaced, but the ew pump started squealing after 6 months and does it hot as well as cold. scottwilson1912 Posted February 5, 2013 Author Share Posted February 5, 2013 Cheers for the help everyone...My next plan was going to be the PAS pump as its alot cheaper than a new alternator.....If its something about to let go id rather it just got on with it so i knew what to replace!!...although i will add ive just had a short trip out in it and gave it a damn good thrashing up the long hill back to our village,nearly 3000rpm and driving up our road there was silence...but im sure my 5am trip to work tomorrow wont be so quiet... davyd8899 Posted February 5, 2013 Share Posted February 5, 2013 do you have access to various different belts etc?? if so try running (not driving fo obvious reasons!!!) the engine for a couple of seconds with a single belt connected first to the alternator, then the tensioner pulley, water pump etc until you find the noise. however be very carefull you dont run for too long without the water pump (again for obvious reasons!!) 10-15 seconds would be enough to hear if there was a noise or not. this is how i found my annoying little noise Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
