Jyodaiam
Evening. Does anyone know what the maximum length that i can carry on top of my defender; l am carrying wooden poles. I have recently recieved an email back from the people that are paid to know and they just referred me to the section with in the law, which is little unclear. As I understand it if I go over 3m then I need an escort. What is not very clear is it 3m back and 3m front = 6 m without an escort or just 3m total?!! Many thanks
GW8IZR
You are responsible for ensuring the load is safe and legal etc, no point saying some bloke on a forum said it was ok :-) but when *I* carry long items on vehicles, I work on up to 1m either end of the vehicle tie a bright marker such as a hi-vi to the ends. 1m to 3m needs the proper markers and a spotter / escort. I will carry 5m poles on a 90 ( itself 3.8m ) but beyond that I'd use a 110 or Hilux etc. Be very careful that long poles etc especially if carried at an angle caused by uneven suspension or roof line Discovery and 110 etc can end up at cyclist / pedestrian head height when joining roads where the junction is uphill or downhill etc, that's one of the times a spotter is important and IMO even if you were within the legal permitted length of protrusion you would still be liable for causing any injury. zardos
The rules for marking an overhanging load are different to what you are legally allowed to carry. The Construction and use regulations say"60% of the distance between the centre of the foremost axle and the foremost point from which the overhang is to be measured" http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/regulation/11/made also table (82(7) from http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/part/IV/chapter/B/made which helpfully refers to another section http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/schedule/12/made But basically you have up to 2m forwards and 3 meters rewards without marking as long as the item is clearly visible (otherwise you should use the approved signs which I believe are shown below)
tacr2man
You can greatly extend the carryiing length by having a trailer behind , as long as you can fit up a suitable support as the overhang starts at the rear of the combination , just make sure there anrt any sharp turns !!!
