Hi-Low selector stuck solid!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

New here, I have recently bought a 2002 defender 90. However, the diff lock selector is stuck in high gearing. The selector goes left and right with ease (diff-lock and out of diff-lock), however, when I try and move the stick forwards, towards the engine, it is stuck solid! As if its hit a brick wall. It does this wether in diff-lock or out of it.

We have stripped off the transmission tunnel but can't seem to fathom what the issue could be.

Has this issue happened before?

I reckon Ralph is correct, linkage is seized though lack of use, mine was the same when I got it. I had to beat the cross shaft (24 on diag) back and forth with a No 3 BFH to free it off! Managed to do it through the gearlever aperture but it's easier to take the tunnel off. If you do any dismantling don't lose the nylon top hat washers (26) or it will be too wobbly to engage, it's fairly obvious how it works when it starts moving.

Ok, took bits of the linkage apart and soaked it in white grease and it is finally usuable!! Much relief. It slots into all 6 positions now. The movements between low and neutral is very slight though, doesn't take much force at all to move it. All works though

Forgot to say, thanks for all the help!
