Keeper96
Hi guys I was struggling to put my '89 2.5 td in diff lock the other day and eventually gave up trying, is there a special technique or just need a lot of force? Cheers
mmgemini
It should just slide in...Is the lever free in the slide. If it is then....... Transmission tunnel and drivers side floor out. Check that the lever into the difflock is free. I have to do this occasionally. So Undo the 8mm nut, 13mm spanner, a couple of turns. WD40 and work the lever, then oil. when finished tighten the nut. Check also that the linkage is all free
Disco-Ron
I tend to engage it with the clutch down, (if I'm stationary) move the lever at the same time as lifting the clutch slightly to rotate the gears . .
mmgemini
I just whack the lever over as I'm driving, making sure the wheels aren't spinning. I range change when driving, just like a proper non synchro gearbox
BigBlue90
Yeah I'm having the same problem? 88 Defender 200tdi with a really awkward diff lock! But it goes in and keeps falling out again, after holding it in whilst driving for a while and putting load on it doing some hills, about 10 min holding it makes it stay in? Any reason why diff locks get so moody and do these things?
western
only through lack of use & lack of lubrication of the mechanism, fairly easy to unbolt, clean & lube with clean new grease.
Disco-Ron
Slop in the linkage can also mean its not getting fully engaged, I re bushes mine, and adjusted it, its fine now!
pat_pending
The actual diff lock is very simple and trouble free, as others have said, it's the linkage that causes problems. Needs a thorough clean up, adjustment and a good dose of proper penetrating oil every so often.
JST
lack of use is hindering selection, as above just clean it up and adjust linkage for positive engagement if required. you dont need to stop or use clutch to engage diff lock, just ensure 4 wheels are rotating at roughly the same speed.
