FridgeFreezer
What flavour cooling system is it? Does it have the tee into the bottom hose from the bottom of the header tank? Do you have the air bleed pipes connected (top of inlet manifold via plenum heater to top of rad / top of rad to header tank)? Could be a stuck/dead stat, cheap & easy to replace to prove it - just make sure you get one with the vent hole in it.

It has exactly this! Do you have the air bleed pipes connected (top of inlet manifold via plenum heater to top of rad / top of rad to header tank)? Not sure will have to check Could be a stuck/dead stat, cheap & easy to replace to prove it - just make sure you get one with the vent hole in it. Ok, so how do they normally fail? Yes, a simple thing to replace. Steve

Ok, so how do they normally fail? I have no idea, my process is "remove old stat and throw in bin, fit new stat and see if it cures the problem" as it's a whole 5 quid and 2 bolts to find out
Chazza
May be a head gasket; start the engine with the cooling system full and the fill-plug removed from the radiator. Continuous bubbling indicates gases getting into the cooling system. If there is no bubbling, take the thermostat out and test it. Check the engine oil as well; if it is white it has been mixed with coolant and the head will have to come off, Good Luck, Cheers Charlie
steve200TDi
Well it looks like a new thermostat has fixed it. We put the old one in boiling water and it didn't open! But now its being drained down again to reseal the water pump as its leaking! We did put a smear of instant gasket on either side of the new gasket but it obviously wasn't enough!
