Upgraded oil cooler & PAS hoses 2.5td

Morning,

After replacing an engine mount which had practically turned to jelly because of the steady drips of oil and PAS fluid leaking from the hoses sitting above it I've decided it really is time to do something about some of the leaks. Notice the word SOME - well it is a Land Rover after all !!

My policy is Don't Replace - Upgrade and I have already fitted braided hoses to the brakes.

So has anyone come across an upgrade to these pipes

Block to Oil Cooler (radiator) flow and return (NRC8507 & NRC8508)

PAS reservoir to pump flow and return - does anyone know the NRC code for these for a 2.5td 19j engine?

Or if anyone has old versions of these kicking about "just in case" I am happy to get Pirtek or similar to make them up for me if you can get internal diameter measurements for me.

Hi Ian , if you do get your hoses made up for you would you put a post up please with the results . I was going the same route and asked a local firm in Aldershot if they could make some but the guy didn't seem too happy as the hoses would be carrying hot oil and wanted to know at what sort of temp seemed a bit strange as I thought hydraulic oil got seriously hot especially on large machinery . Cheers

When I was out poking about in the engine bay at the weekend I noticed the oil cooler pipes have a tag on them with the date of manufacture on them

The tags read 11/86 - just before my Landy was born.

So after 27 years they need replacing. I think I'd be going some to upgrade from that so I'm going to buy genuine replacements.

When I had new oil cooler hoses built up for the 100" I went to Pirtek. They laughed when I mentioned pressure and temp. Lowest temp stuff they had was 350 degrees and pressure was 300psi. Made a really nice job as well. I got them to take the fixings off the old hoses and then thread the ends of the hose so that if one was to burst/abrade I could simply get a cheap(er) hose insert

On experience, one Pirtek is not necessarily as good as another. Avonmouth Depot is spotty dog, but the old Taunton Depot was poor. I'm sure there must be other hydraulic hose folk - like Hose Doctor who are good. It would be worth asking either a farmer or a plant operator

I had to go bespoke building the Ibex and had to modify both power steering and oil cooler pipes.

I started with 300Tdi power steering pipes which run across the front chassis rail and took the pump delivery connection off the 200Tdi hose then grafted together with hydraulic hose to suite. Had to dress down swage on the tube to get hydraulic hose on.

The oil cooler was all new fittings and hydraulic hose. Would recommend you go down to your hydraulics specialist with an idea of what you want to make up your hoses then get them to supply you with the hose and fittings including the ferrules. This will allow you to put the system together in your garage and get alignment right before taking it all back for swaging. Be careful and remember that you are likely to be unable to remove the hose from a fitting once you've pushed them together its surprising how they grip - don't forget the ferrule! get system all aligned then get a marker out and match mark the fitting ferrule and hose.

Excuse my ignorance on this Rob, all I was going to do was remove the oil cooler pipes run them into a hydraulics place , Pitek or the like, and ask them to make up new like for like but just a gnats longer , the reason for this is the pipes on my 200tdi conversion in my 90 are past their best and weeping . Not quite the same area but sort of , what do you reckon the chances are of getting the oil return from the turbo to block being made up , only asking as your more into the bespoke type of stuff than I am , or is this not really hydraulic territory ? Its surprising how just a little bit out affects the way the hoses nature wants them to lay when you try connecting them up. If you rock up with your hoses and ask them to remake then they won't have a template to realign them to, particularly if you retain the existing fittings. You will also be surprised how just a little bit longer can be just a little bit too long. Chances of getting something back that fits right and you're happy with are probably quite slim. Bear in mind that the replacement hydraulic hose will be stiffer than the std hose.

With regards the turbo return pipe I'm not sure why it has the external steel braid - assume temperature. However everything is doable although price may be less palatable. That one may be easier to replace from the LR catalogue.

Pirtek is a franchise operation - meaning you take pot luck and can land on a really-good or utterly-hopeless local branch.

When it comes to having hydraulic hoses made up I'm lucky to be a half-hour journey from Castle Combe circuit and the "Merlin Motorsport" guys - who've always been able to work out a solution to my high-pressure-pipework and exhaust-needs.

Here's a couple of photos of the hoses I had made up to suit the oil cooler, got rid of the hard pipe sections that fit up to the oil cooler couldn't get them to fit round the air filter.
