Tanuki
Sounds like the oil-filter is draining itself when the engine's stopped. You are using a genuine oil-filter? There should be a valve inside the filter that stops this drain-down. A lot of the 'pattern' parts do not include this. Could also be a sticking pressure-relief valve in the oil pump. Finally, what oil are you using?? Rover V8s don't play nicely with modern runny-as-Australian-lager oils - a 15W50 is about as thin as I'd go [the original RV8 specified 20W50]
Johannadine
Thanks. how can i take the relief valve out. and how many relief valves are there can a person service a oil pump

FridgeFreezer
1st thing: Are you using thick enough oil? You want 20W50, 15W40, or 10W40. 2nd: Is the oil filter genuine parts or something else? Best not to start dismantling the oil pump until you've checked the basics.
Johannadine
Hi Fridge Freezer, I am using Castrol 20W50 and yes it is the Genuine filter. The tappet noise is only on the right side.
Team Idris
It could be the relief valve stuck open? Mine did this on the 3.5 RV8. The bad news is that it did this because it was jammed with bits of cam shaft. But they do jam open without needing an engine re-build. Pop the lid off and have a look at the valve and the gears
Johannadine
What would happen if i put a thicker spring in so it does not open so quickly.
Tanuki
What would happen if i put a thicker spring in so it does not open so quickly. If the relief-valve-s plunger is jamming partially-open, a thicker spring won't help [unless it's massively-powerful, in which case you might as well not have a relief-valve and then you'll go on to blowing seals and bursting oil-filter canisters when you do a cold-start in winter]. Fix the underlying problem, rather than trying to fudge-and-kludge it.

Johannadine
only the one side number 1 piston tappet is making a noise (clicking noise) could that be due to the oil pressure.
Tanuki
Fix the oil-pressure issues. Run it with fresh oil - then after 500 miles add a pint of ATF to the oil. ATF is well-stuffed with detergents and will remove time-accumulated varnish and grot from the lifters. Run it with ATF-in-the-oil for 500 miles. Drive-it-like-you-stole-it; lots of full-throttle-and-don't-shift-until-you-run-out-of-revs. Then do an oil-change - which will bring out all the accumulated lacquer-varnish-and-sludge. If you're inclined - also drop the sump and clean the mesh-filter on the oil pickup-pipe.
