Half-shaft anorak required

Can someone ID some half shafts for me? There were sold as being Ashcroft, secondhand, nearly ten years ago.

The only identifying feature is that they have "HD" stamped into one end, rather than the usual "ASH OSR" etc that you find on Ashcroft parts

They are 24/24spline and take OEM driveflanges

Does anyone recognise them from the description?

... take it they are rear ones....?

length?

whats so unusual about them? The reason why I ask is I have a 90 v8, and they came out with a 24 spline HD (4-pin) rear diff, so 24 spline even from landrover was not uncommon, and they are very near uniform in thickness but they are not specialist grade of material.

as for the "OEM drive flanges" there are two, both have the same spline count, but one is generally referred to as a "thick" and the other .... you guessed it! "thin" one, but the PCD is slightly different so in theory they cannot be put on the opposite type of hub.

I think the thin drive member (usually on disk braked vehicles) also has an oil seal that rides on the driveshaft, although mine (89 90 v8) does not as it was drum braked.

anorak enough?

Yes, they are rears

There's nothing particularly unusual about them, I'm just curious as to what they are.

They've withstood 10 years (ish) of abuse under a RRC then a 90 with an ARB fitted and a 3.9 V8 with an unsympathetic driver. They have a slight twist now though. The only marking is HD in the end. These two things make me think they are aftermarket and not factory 90 V8 shafts, though I'm open to correction

This is interesting as I have a pair of 24 spline shafts that were removed from a military 90 with a 4pin diff.

The shafts have GS and DH stamped on the end.

I have no idea what this means but someone who looked at them said they looked like GKN heavy duty ones.

yes, did think that the military 90's had the HD (4pin) diffs installed too [Nige may be along to confirm in a while]

I thought that some of the diffs were made by GKN, hence the shafts may have been too, don;t think they were made out of anything special as they were made to a price, they are just thicker (uniform thickness, no shoulder / more slender shaft).

Dave may confirm if there was ever a material change on the ashcrofts shafts at any time.

Off Road Toad makes a statement here about aftermarket shafts being virtually all the same http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=91222&page=1

think the critical bit is the length if you want a new one (aftermarket) the rest is immaterial (no pun intended!)

Hi,

Not ours, I think they are the factory HD option ones that were supplied with the 4 pin diffs,

We changed from EN24T to 4340 in 2005 and now also offer most shafts in 300M as well which is only about 15% stronger in terms of UTS but much more 'elastic' to withstand shock loading much better.
