Starter motor solenoid issues

For a long time I have occasionally needed to crawl under me Disco TD5 to push in the cable to the solenoid to get the car to start. This would happen maybe once a month or once every 6 weeks. Now the car will not start because of this has anyone had the same problem if so how did you fix it?

My initial thought was the connector on the cable was dodgy now I am not sure.

Appears to be a common thing on Td5's... its reasonably well documented, and you can get solenoid rebuild kits of fleebay... the contact design is bad, and gets worn away easily... got a kit ready for when I pull the engine on my Td5 90.

So basically I scrapped a good starter motor because it needed a £10 repair? :rtfm:

Thanks for that took less than an hour to fix once I got round to it. Do you have any idea how long before it needs done again?

Look on the bright side, at least you have one, according to the works service manual (LR Original) and RAVE the 300Tdi doesn't have a starter motor !

Not only do I have one.............It now works properly just need to fix everything else for the MOT.

Before people invented repair kits we used to rebuild them here by making a set of contacts out of copper earth strap. A vice, a junior hacksaw and a round and square files, along with a bit of patience, and all sorted. But definitely easier to buy a kit if it's only a tenner!
